Leavenworth, Washington Q&A
Sep 28th 2026
Visiting Leavenworth is truly a magical experience. The history and story of how this Washington village revitalized itself into a Bavarian-themed, world-class destination is incredible. Receptacles are only one part of the equation, but it is a joy to see Victor Stanley standardized in this unique town, not only for quality and functionality, but aesthetic appearance as well. We reached out to the city of Leavenworth for the following insights on their winter wonderland.
WHEN WAS LEAVENWORTH FOUNDED?
Leavenworth was founded in 1885.
HOW DID THE BAVARIAN THEME COME ABOUT AND WHAT WAS THE REDEVELOPMENT PROCESS?
The decision to adopt the Bavarian theme was made in the early 1960s as a strategy to attract tourists and revitalize the town’s economy. The town leaders were inspired by the alpine hills that surround both Leavenworth and German Bavaria, and they decided to design the city after three German towns: Bemalte Fassaden, Leipzig, and Munich. This transformation was not just a mere facelift. In addition to completely renovating the downtown area, community leaders created a series of festivals, drawing revelers into town.

AESTHETIC DESIGN PLAYS A LARGE PART IN THE BAVARIAN THEME, HOW DO YOU FEEL STREET FURNISHINGS LIKE OUR RECEPTACLES HAVE HELPED YOU REACH THOSE GOALS?
Street furnishings like Victor Stanley receptacles assist in maintaining the Bavarian theme. They blend with the aesthetic design of the town, enhancing its charm and authenticity.

WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO CHOOSE VICTOR STANLEY RECEPTACLES?
What influenced our decision to go with these receptacles, was the look of the vertical slats on the sides and the flared top that complimented the Bavarian theme. Another factor was the quality powder coating that would stand up to the sun, snow, and heavy use these receptacles would need to endure.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ONGOING CHALLENGES TO KEEPING THE BAVARIAN THEME DOMINANT?
Maintaining the Bavarian theme can be challenging due to the need for consistency in architectural style and the upkeep of the town’s overall appearance. All buildings and related signage in the City’s downtown are required by code to adhere to the theme.

HAVE THERE BEEN CHALLENGES REGARDING TRADITIONAL WASTE COLLECTION?
Residents have a weekly collection for garbage. Regarding waste collection, some challenges include hard-to-reach locations during the winter months, alleyway congestion for trash trucks, and overflowing bins that attract local wildlife (i.e., bears). In addition, due to the influx of tourism the sheer volume of waste that we manage in our downtown core can be challenging at times.
DID LEAVENWORTH’S PRECIPITATION INFLUENCE YOU TO STANDARDIZE THE “DOME” LID? HAVE THEY BEEN EFFECTIVE AGAINST RAIN AND SNOW?
Leavenworth averages 24 inches of precipitation per year, which influenced the decision to standardize the “dome” lid on trash receptacles. The dome lids have been effective in preventing rain and snow from entering the bins, thus keeping the waste dry and easier to manage.
